At Amityville Orthodontics, we want you to feel confident, comfortable, and 100% positive about moving forward with your treatment plan, which is why we always take the time to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Below, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most common ones we receive from our patients for your convenience.

When should my child see an orthodontist for the first time?

The American Association of Orthodontics advises that parents bring their children in for their first orthodontic screening around seven years old. Even though they will likely only have a handful of permanent teeth, this is the perfect time to take preventive and proactive measures to address key developmental concerns. Dr. Justyna offers Phase 1 pediatric orthodontics to correct severe bite problems and guide children’s oral development to ensure your child’s smile is healthy and happy.

I don’t want to wear noticeable metal braces. Is there another option?

Many teens and adults don’t want to have to wear noticeable metal braces for up to two years in order to straighten teeth and correct bite problems. Fortunately, there are a variety of other more discreet options available to you. We not only provide transparent clear aligners, but we also offer clear braces. These treatments are significantly less noticeable, yet just as effective as traditional metal braces.

How long will I need to wear braces for?

The length of your orthodontic treatment will depend on your individual case as well as how diligent you are about coming in for routine check-in appointments and taking care of your oral appliance. Additionally, everybody’s smile responds differently to orthodontic treatment, which can affect the length of the process. Most standard treatment plans involving traditional braces are about two years, but timelines can vary from anywhere between six and 30 months long.

Does getting braces hurt?

After having your braces placed and tightened, you’ll likely experience some soreness and discomfort. This is completely normal, and typically it can be remedied by taking an over-the-counter medication. The pain you may feel should go away after about a week, though. If it lingers longer than expected or is getting worse, call our office right away for help!
