Types of Orthodontic Appliances
Removable Retainers
Following any orthodontic treatment, whether that’s traditional braces or Invisalign aligners, it’s crucial to wear a retainer to maintain the results that you worked so hard to achieve! Removable retainers are custom-designed to fit securely over your teeth and within your mouth. For the first few months following your treatment, you will likely need to wear your retainer day and night. However, after some time, you may only need to wear it at night. Because they’re removable, they’re easy to use and clean, making them a convenient, excellent option for patients of all ages.
Fixed Retainers
A fixed retainer, also referred to as a permanent retainer, is fit and secured within the mouth, behind the teeth, meaning it can’t be moved or taken out. These can be affixed either across all of your teeth to maintain their alignment, or a certain number of teeth to address severe rotation or gaps between them. After the time predetermined by you and Dr. Justyna, your retainer can be removed.
Palatal Expander
We often recommend palatal expanders for young patients whose bone structure isn’t completely developed yet, as it’s designed to help guide the growth. These retainer-like devices fit onto the molars and act to gradually widen the jaw over time, improving orthodontic concerns like overcrowding, crossbite, and even improving your child’s chewing strength. Depending on the severity of the condition, a palatal expander may need to be in a for few weeks, months, or up to one year.
Thumb Crib
Without proper preventive measures, thumb-sucking can lead to a host of orthodontic issues as your child ages, including bite problems and incorrect dental development. If your child is having a difficult time breaking this habit, Dr. Justyna may recommend a thumb crib. This is a type of oral brace that’s attached to the mouth and mostly hidden from view. The design stops them from being able to touch their gums or the roof of their mouth, making thumb-sucking uncomfortable and encouraging them to break the habit.
